COACH ERIC.

ERIC BORER | Trail & Ultra Specialist | DULUTH, MN

Eric Borer’s coaching journey began at the age of 16, where he discovered a passion for teaching and leading young athletes. Since that first season in 2002, his experience has spanned youth, high school, recreational, and elite athletes, helping each to grow both in sport and in life.

Early in his career, Eric coached team sports like lacrosse and hockey, learning that success goes beyond tactics—it's rooted in relationships. He found that empowering athletes through trust and communication was the key to unlocking potential.

In 2013, Eric & his wife Brynn relocated to New Mexico, where his love for the mountains led him to trail and ultrarunning. For him, running isn't just about the miles—it's a means of exploring the wild, pushing boundaries, and embracing the adventure of unknown terrain. His approach to ultrarunning is deeply personal, seeing it as a journey of growth, challenge, and awe, rather than just crossing finish lines.

Eric’s coaching philosophy is grounded in the belief that the real victory lies in the months of hard work leading up to race day. It’s the sacrifices, the lessons, and the moments shared with the people that matter most that truly shape an athlete's journey. The race itself? That’s just the icing on the cake.

With an Associates (AAS) degree in Physical Therapy, Eric brings a deep understanding of injury prevention and recovery, ensuring athletes can train hard while staying healthy. He tailors his programs to fit each athlete's life—making sure training works for them, not against them.

Under his guidance, athletes have achieved incredible milestones. In 2024, three athletes completed their first ultras at the Grand Traverse Mountain Run in Colorado and the Elm Creek Backyard Ultra in Minnesota. In 2022, one of Eric’s athletes set a PR at Rocky Raccoon 100, meeting their goal of finishing in under 24 hours. In 2021, an athlete placed 1st female at the Beaverhead Endurance Runs 100k followed by 1st Overall at the Wild Canyons 50k, and 1st Overall at the  Stagecoach 100.

With experience as a coach, crew, and runner, Eric has been involved in some of the country’s most iconic races, including the Hardrock 100, Superior 100, High Lonesome 100, The Bear 100 and Ultra Trail du Mont Blanc. He has helped countless athletes achieve personal breakthroughs and navigate the challenges of ultramarathons, whether aiming for a PR or simply crossing the finish line.

Eric currently lives in (West!) Duluth, Minnesota with his wife Brynn and their two dogs, Lily & Bowie. Some of Eric’s notable running performances include:
